The housing downturn of the last few years, caused a lull, for many home builders. Steve Moore, a partner with BSB Design in West Des Moines, Iowa, an architectural firm, spent the time studying what features people wanted in their new houses. In an article from the Chicago Tribune, Moore discusses the features that are being sought in modern homes.
- Storage for all our stuff. The mud room, typically a laundry room connecting the kitchen and garage, is being utilized more for storage of everyday items such as keys, back packs, and other similar daily items.
- Multi-generational households have been growing, and this can mean a separate living space being provided for extended family. Sometimes the extended family members acts as a caregiver for the existing family, and may also assist with funds to purchase a multi-generational home.
- Some houses have spaces dedicated specifically for pets.
- Technology has become an integral part of modern life. With it comes messy cables, that are difficult to hide. Many homes are now being outfitted with built-in storage for laptops, gaming counsels, and sufficient outlets to power all of the devices
