A recent article in the Chicago Tribune interviewed Jim Wentling, a Philadelphia architect, who compiled a list of home building trends in 2011. He has recently updated his list, and below is a summary of recent home building trends.
Home Building Trends from 2013
- The great room or family room is seeing a bump in size. While the formal living room is being turned into a den or office.
- Garage sizes are increasing to accommodate larger vehicles and for greater storage space.
- Second floor laundry rooms.
- Tray ceilings in dining rooms and master suites.
- Roomier showers with full-tile interiors and seats. Tubs aren’t going away, but is not being included in the plans as much.
- Drop Zones, or the area between the garage and mudroom. This area usually contains cubbies, counters, and benches to typically store items such as weather gear, and book bags.
